He had surrendered his room… Susanna’s room, to Valerie’s sister with what he though had been good grace. It had been accepted, churlishly he felt, without any expression of regret that he would have to spend the night on the sofa and live out of his overnight bag. He felt sorry for Valerie and would have stayed on, considerate of her bereavement and conscious that she shared it with him, but he was surplus to the household requirements, at least for the time being. He was not sorry to have a reason to leave. He sat Valerie down and gave her Deborah’s telephone number but asked her as earnestly as he could, to avoid giving it to anyone, anyone at all except the police. Please could she tell everyone else that he had left and would be in touch when he had a forwarding address and she would pass on messages when he got in touch. He hoped she understood.
